Visualising wellness for a wearable device

2014 — 2016

Spire is a San Francisco-based wearable company that tracks and interprets your breathing patterns to provide actionable feedback.

I was the first designer to join the team, working on the pilot app through to product launch, collaborating closely with the CEO and founder to bring their vision to life.

Spire's user base exceeded 10,000 throughout my time there.

We learned how haptic feedback could help users become more aware of tense breathing.

The pilot program highlighted a desire to better understand the correlation between breathing patterns and your mental state.

We prioritised simplicity in the way we visualised their breathing in real time, highlighting their average breaths per minute to build understanding.

There was the option to quickly access breathing exercises to help guide you out of moments of tension and irregular breathing.

Being one of the early products to design for the Apple Watch allowed us to strip back the experience, focussing on providing real time actionable feedback focussed on your breath.

Featured in Apple stores globally, the packaging design focused on finding a balance between Apple’s design guidelines and our visual language.
